Growing out your Natural Hair
Thursday, January 28, 2016In High School I hated that my hair was consistently breaking and really weak. It would never grow really long and was pretty thin. After doing some research, I recently decided to go natural and have been growing it out for about a year now. I've got a really long way to go but here are 5 Tips that I've been using that have really helped me so far. These tricks can also be used for relaxed hair so feel free to give them a go :)
1. Moisturize!
Ah, this is so important!!! African hair gets really dry, really easily, and that's mostly why it breaks. Go to any store near you and grab some shampoo and conditioner. Try to wash your hair with these about twice and week and then use any oil (virgin olive oil is my fav) to seal it all in. (We'll be publishing our list of the best hair products you can get in Zimbabwe soon, so look out for a post)
2. Don't comb your hair
This may sound crazy, but I'm serious give your hair a break from combs. Our hair is super coily and gets tangled easily. Most combs rip through the knots and can cause serious damage. Instead, try using your fingers to get knots out and style. Im telling you its definitely not as bad as you might think. I've been able to do all the styles I would usually do but without the pain and breakage :)
3. Figure out a go to style
I know at school, you probably don't have a wide range of style's you're allowed to do. Although, it may seem annoying this works to your advantage. What! The less you play with your hair the better. Putting it up in a bun, or trying out some stylish plaits helps keep your hands outta there. One thing to remember though, is that you don't want to get something too tight! Try getting looser plaits these won't damage your hair as much. (we'll have a video on different styles up soon too!)
4. Eat healthy food
Your hair grows out of your head so the healthier you are the healthier it will be. The same way you have to water and tend the soil for plants to grow, you have to take care of yourself for your hair to grow. Drinking water, eating fruits or vegetables, and avoiding too much junk food is essential. This is a really great tip, cause you'll end up feeling good all around.
5. Don't sweat the small stuff (patience)
Patience is key when growing out your hair. Contrary to popular belief, African hair grows just as fast as all other hair types. If you're obsessed with length it can add stress to your life that you don't need. Seriously its just hair, you are beautiful with it, or without so don't sweat the small stuff!
